The Government of Guyana has given more than a million acres of rainforest for researching sustainable management of rainforest ecosystems. In 1995 the Government and the Commonwealth Secretariat agreed to list the indigenous people of the region as collaborative managers of the programme. Local Government Channel takes a closer look at how indigenous communities can effectively govern themselves and take part in development.
