What's the challenge?
In a time of economic downturn, it's more important than ever that councils are seen as forward-thinking, innovative and efficient organisations and good places to work. The LGA Group wants to celebrate the diverse talent in local authorities and promote working in the sector.
The Local Government Challenge is an exciting new competition, which seeks out talented individuals and tests their ingenuity, creativity, ability to lead and potential to become top local government executives. This competition is a unique combination of political and managerial expertise.
The competition:
Round 1 - team challenges
A "heat" stage, to take place at intervals over a five month period, will test 10 candidates in a series of tasks undertaken in teams, designed and hosted by local authorities. Each challenge will be held over one day.
Round 2 - elimination challenge
Four finalists will then go head-to head at the LGA group conference in Bournemouth 2010, facing a panel of leading local government figures.
Round 3 - the interview
The two most outstanding contestants will have an open interview for a fictional chief executive's job, conducted by a panel of leading councillors.
Prize that benefits your council
The winner of the Local Government Challenge will receive the first Bruce-Lockhart Scholarship. The scholarship will offer up to £10,000 for the winning candidate.
- promote localism and local government through the exchange of ideas with the USA and Europe
- encourage successful ideas to be put into practice locally
- promote best practice and raise the profile of local leadership and UK local government
How can you get involved?
We are seeking five local authorities to design and host a unique and individual challenge and we invite all authorities to put forward proposals.
We are looking for exciting, innovative and realistic tasks that will challenge the competitors and bring out their leadership talent and potential. There will be one task in each of five categories:
- a front-line service challenge
- a policy development challenge
- a media/communications challenge
- a community engagement challenge
- an innovation challenge
Design & Host a Challenge
You are invited to identify a topical local priority or theme around which to design your challenge. Each challenge should last for one day.
The judging panel, consisting of councilors and officers, will select the five winning proposals.
Hosting a challenge is a great opportunity for local authorities to help promote working in local government, to recognise and showcase innovation and talent in their workforces and gain high profile national publicity.
Nominate a contestant
We also invite councils to nominate contestants to take part in the Local Government Challenge. Applications to host a challenge will open on 20 July 2009 and close 11th September 2009.
Challenge Applications are now closed.
