Allerdale Borough Council

Staff from across the Council, many coping with personal tragedies and flood-related problems, came together as one team to tackle the emergency.

The work that was done during the emergency included:

  • reception centres at Cockermouth, Workington and Keswick
  • rehousing those affected by flooding
  • preventing the spread of disease
  • handling media enquiries 24/7
  • inspecting over 700 properties for structural damage
  • distributing 8,000 sandbags in horrendous conditions
  • assisting at the strategic centre of the multi-agency emergency response
  • working throughout the night to clean streets of mud, silt and debris
  • collecting 1,000 appliances, from fridges to cookers, and 1,000 tonnes of bulky waste and flood debris
  • resolving legal/planning issues within 24 hours to build a temporary train station on Council land
  • working with partners to get Allerdale back open for business.
