Allerdale Borough Council
Staff from across the Council, many coping with personal tragedies and flood-related problems, came together as one team to tackle the emergency.
The work that was done during the emergency included:
- a 24/7 emergency contact centre; some staff doing 26 hour shifts
- reception centres at Cockermouth, Workington and Keswick
- rehousing those affected by flooding
- preventing the spread of disease
- handling media enquiries 24/7
- inspecting over 700 properties for structural damage
- distributing 8,000 sandbags in horrendous conditions
- assisting at the strategic centre of the multi-agency emergency response
- working throughout the night to clean streets of mud, silt and debris
- collecting 1,000 appliances, from fridges to cookers, and 1,000 tonnes of bulky waste and flood debris
- resolving legal/planning issues within 24 hours to build a temporary train station on Council land
- working with partners to get Allerdale back open for business.
