Norfolk County Council

One of Norfolk County Council's key objectives is to make Norfolk's roads safer and the Casualty Reduction Team delivers this challenging agenda. During the past year, the work of this team has led to Norfolk's lowest ever road casualty figures with the number of killed and seriously injured (KSI) on Norfolk's roads having fallen by over 56% from 2000, to just 388 KSI, including our lowest ever number of fatalities of 38. This progress far exceeds an initial national target of reducing KSI in Norfolk to 517 by 2010. The team's daily focus is on improving road junctions, road surfaces, lighting, and signage plus delivering a number of specifically targeted campaigns aimed at key age groups and particular road users. Additionally, in conjunction with the Fire Service, NHS and the Police, they deliver joint educational and instructional courses. Using Beacon status awarded in 2006, the team influences the regional and national debate on casualty reduction including the delivery of the Timebank web resource which allows road safety practitioners to swap resources.
