Resource Manager, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue

Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue's Andy Whitfield has pioneered a groundbreaking new project in the form of an environmentally sustainable fire station.

Due to his efforts, the new Bardney fire station is championing sustainable practices and mitigating its environmental impact through the introduction of green technology.

The station showcases an on-site wind turbine, photovoltaic solar panels, innovative underfloor heating, air source heat pumps, and a rainwater harvesting and collection system. It features energy monitoring technology and smart meters that ensure efficient use of electricity. These technologies will reduce the station's energy use and carbon footprint, as well as saving cash.

The station will help Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue cut carbon emissions by 20% by the end of 2012. Andy said: "It would have been easy to churn out another fire station just like those we built in the past - but we need to look towards the future."
