Paul Vernon
Driver, Ring and Ride - Bath and North East Somerset Council
Paul Vernon works as a driver for the Midsomer Norton and Radstock 'Ring and Ride' which provides an essential transport service to people that cannot easily get out and about on their own. In 2008 Paul came to the rescue of two elderly residents - both were Ring and Ride customers. When driving past their home he noticed smoke coming from the ground floor. The whole of the ground floor was heavily smoke logged and the kitchen was well alight due to a chip pan fire. Paul entered the smoke-filled building and helped two elderly residents, one of whom was disabled, to safety. After ascertaining that no other people were inside, Paul asked a passer-by to call the emergency services, ensuring that the fire was brought under control and everyone involved received prompt medical treatment for smoke inhalation. Paul's prompt and calm response and rescue, without doubt, saved the lives of two elderly people.
